Examples of non-legal resource needs include food assistance, assistance locating housing, mental health resources, or transportation needs.

Comprehensive Resource Finders

    • Information and referral service provided by United Way of North Carolina and powered by local United Ways of North Carolina. Families and individuals can call 2-1-1 or 1-888-892-1162 to receive free and confidential information on health and human services within their community.

Disaster Recovery-Specific Non-Legal Resources

  • NC Disaster Case Management
    • Under the NC Department of Public Safety, NC-DCM is available to guide survivors through the recovery process by making a recovery plan that fits their individual needs, helping find available resources, and work through challenges caused by the storm. Link to application. 
  • Vaya Health
    • Behavioral and Mental Health resources, housing programs and initiatives, Medicaid questions.
  • Samaritan’s Purse
    • Building and repairing houses as well as replacing mobile homes, Priority given to homeowners with no insurance or who are underinsured. Applicants must also fall between minimum and maximum income levels. Telephone: 828-588-4663. 
  • Hope4NC Helpline: 1-855-587-3496
    • Hope4NC assists individuals as they recover from the devastating impacts of Hurricane Helene. If you are experiencing stress, emotional fatigue, a mental health crisis, or just need someone to talk to, you can call the Hope4NC Helpline, 1-855-587-3463. Hope4NC is free, confidential, and available 24/7.
  • Tropical Storm Helene Private Road and Bridge Program

  • Utility Payment Assistance
    • Duke Energy Share the Light Fund: To receive financial assistance, you must be a Duke Energy Progress residential customer and have a past due balance, unpaid deposit for utility service or unpaid reconnection charge. Call 800-662-7020 to give or get help.
    • Dominion Energy: energy assistance at 877-776-2427 or online for more.
  • Multi-Agency Resource Centers
    • FEMA disaster recovery centers (DRC’s) in WNC are now locally operated resource centers.  The centers operate Monday – Friday, 8am – 5pm, except the Yancey County center is open on weekdays from 10am – 6pm.
