Serving Those Who Serve Others: NCBF Wills for Heroes
With the slowing of in-person events due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the NCBF had the opportunity to retool the program, working with lead volunteers to establish a Wills for Heroes document production app. The app makes the program more accessible to attorneys across the state making it possible for us to reach first responder communities outside of the typical metropolitan areas. Most Wills for Heroes clinics are now hybrid with volunteer attorneys meeting first responders virtually to prepare documents and first responders reporting to an in-person notary clinic to execute their documents with our volunteer notaries. We continue to seek new volunteers for upcoming clinics.
Thank you to the many attorney, paralegal, and law student volunteers, along with the generous support of Lawyers Mutual Liability Insurance Company of North Carolina, for helping the North Carolina Bar Foundation be a power of greater good through the Wills for Heroes program.
In 2021-22, 262 first responders and their families were served by 82 volunteers through Wills for Heroes.
